Hang out with your pooch or your pals inside or take advantage of the terrace at this self-styled neighbourhood coffee shop and aperitivo bar in the Baltic Triangle, which serves a selection of brunchy numbers off the menu and daily specials displayed on the blackboard.

The focus is on low waste, great taste, with a small number of fresh dishes led by the seasons and prepared from scratch on site every day. So dedicated to the low-waste approach are they, the COU kitchen uses up any leftovers – barista milk goes into making ricotta, dehydrated garnishes are created from fruit and the ends of bread become sourdough heel-crackers. Produce that would otherwise have gone in the bin is reinvented into a tasty snack, served for free every time you buy a drink from 5pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Aperitivo time also includes sample bites of the main menu dishes – a kind of try-before-you-buy for your next visit – and there’s always something veggie. So the food. At time of writing, the offer was firmly fixed towards light breakfast and lunch plates with a global twist – the eggs benny combined roast pork belly with a bun, poached egg, miso hollandaise and hoisin; smashed avo on sourdough was given an extra depth with the addition of burnt cherry tomatoes, green chilli and pumpkin seeds. That barista ricotta (they weren’t kidding) was teamed with scrambled eggs and kale pesto for a vegetarian green eggs on toast; Cheddar rarebit came alongside spinach, house aubergine and squash pickle.

Drinks wise, there’s locally roasted coffee from Neighbourhood, soft drinks from independent suppliers with a focus on fairtrade (such as Karma Cola), low-intervention natural wine, craft beers from brewers around the North and simple, no-nonsense cocktails.
