Evil Eye Beer and Burrito Shack
Cheap and cheerful Mexican-inspired grub in the form of – you guessed it – burritos is the flavour of the month in this colourful Day Of The Dead iconography-adorned Smithdown Road boozer sidelining in live bands and bingo. As the Facebook page says: ‘Not a tattoo parlour.’
The burritos, we’re assured, are ‘awesome’, and there’s certainly quite a spread: burritos, breakfast burritos, Sunday roast burritos and build your own burritos are all options. Of course, they all have punning names, but Hallou, Is It Me You’re Looking For – a vegetarian grilled halloumi number with vegetables and spicy pico de gallo salsa – gets our vote. Hot on its heels, literally, is the Cluck Norris chipotle chilli chicken with guacamole to pinch back the burn, but if it’s an eye-watering experience that is the only thing that’s worth dragging yourself out of the house for, then Montezuma’s Revenge has five pepper emojis next to its name and, very kindly, the kitchen offers to do meat, vegetarian and also vegan versions, so there’s no escaping.
Plenty of liquid refreshment is of course on hand to put out the fire in the form of beers and cocktails, but perhaps you might be tempted with a good old bowl of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, or – more in keeping with the Latin American theme rather than edging Stateswards – churros.
