Americana comes to Sale courtesy husband-and-wife team Gavin and Jane Gosnell’s neighbourhood diner and bar Mustard with its all-day NYC-inspired comfort food, fresh coffee and shakes, draught craft beer and carefully curated cocktail selection.
There are brioche bun dogs and burgers, loaded fries and nachos, and fancy mac’n’cheese with shallots and bacon. There are salt and pepper cauliflower bites, frickles (fried pickles) and sticky ribs. There are hipster buzzwords like kimchi and Sriracha, slaw and smashed guac. But, perhaps most importantly, there is buttermilk fried chicken, and lots of it. Original, cheesy or spiced, strips and dips, wings – if you fancy fried chicken in Sale, you’ve come to the right place. “Fab food, not fast food” is the motto, and all of Mustard’s dishes are made with ingredients that are delivered daily, prepared from scratch on the premises and cooked to order. The chicken and eggs are free range while the native and breed meats come from small family farms in the North York Moors National Park, where traditional, compassionate farming methods produce great-tasting, award-winning cuts.
There’s also proper New York-style baked cheesecake for afters or just an afternoon pick-me-up alongside your Americano or flat white, and there are vegan cakes to complement the rest of the plant-based savoury offer.
