Potion at Afflecks

Restaurant - Global

Calling itself “earth friendly”, it’s all about local sourcing and also kitchen sorcery at Affleck’s Potion, run as it is by neurodivergent eclectic witch The Rock Fairy, founder of fellow third-floor tenant, eco-friendly lifestyle brand and zero-waste emporium Earth Friendly Rocker.

Potion cafe serves “top northern grub with a bit of magic”, made from scratch using local, sustainable produce – this is a certified no-avocado zone. There’s coffee and treats plus sandwiches, soups and specials, and most of it is (or can be) plant-based. Let’s begin at the beginning with brekkie. “A full English breakfast is a personal thing … so we’re letting you make your own magic” – build your own breakfast here is known as hocus pocus, and there’s all the usual rashers and bangers, plus vegan versions including Bury black pudding without the blood and scrambled tofu. Butty wise, and on white or brown bloomer, with house garden salad (and chips for a bit extra), you can choose from free range egg mayo, tuna and sweetcorn, ploughman’s mature Cheddar and carved ham (vegan swaps available), BLT (vegan bacon version on request), club or vegan club (swapping out the bacon and chicken). The soup offer varies according to what’s in season and available from Organic North, the co-operative wholesalers at nearby New Smithfield Market. Celebrating good produce, the spells – sorry, soups – are rustled up from scratch by the resident kitchen witch and they’re “always made with magick in mind” using Cheshire-based Nine Meals From Anarchy stock that’s made from organic veggies destined to be thrown away. All use locally grown, organic ingredients, roasted first for a full flavour, and favourites have included cauliflower and cumin, carrot and maple syrup (to bring out the natural sweetness), plus tomato and black garlic (and a few secret ingredients).

Sweet treats, perfect for afters or just to accompany your coffee, include brownies and blondies from Ditto Bakes, given a special Potion touch such as extra sprinkles.
