All your steak (and gin) needs sorted. Alston Bar & Beef Manchester is the groups’ second venue – their first in England – and it’s a big one. Over 160 covers sit alongide a bar touting a 60-strong gin selection, including 14 ‘cold compound’ infusions produced onsite, and quality takes on all your favourite cocktials (Negroni, Espresso Martini). A designated entrance on the Cathedral Street leads down to the monochrome space, brightened with locally commissioned murals, and areas for group or private dining. It’s a little echo-y (especially the devoted ‘secret’ bar downstairs) but cooking and prices are spot on. Start with seared scallops and ‘burnt ends’ or a traditional ‘Arbroath smokie and crowdie roulade’; a cylinder of soft, flavour-packed fishy paté with charred corn and potato foam. Steak is the main event – and rightly so. Sourced from accredited farms situated along the Scottish Borders, an area of luscious grasslands known as the Tweed Valley, meat is dry-hung for 35 days. The T-bone or ‘butchers cut’ D-rump are exemplary, particularly with sides like green peppercorn sauce and skin-on chips while steak alternatives include Ayrshire pork chop with curried onion puree, and grilled bream with coconut rice. Finish off a chocolate almond and sea salt brownie, poached pear, dusted in a toasted oat crumb with crème Anglais and bottle of the finest US Zinfandel. Enjoy.
