Batard at Escape to Freight Island

Another of Manchester’s successful lockdown projects, Batard is co-owned by former Gooey head baker Lewis Loughman and Dorothy Jaffa. The pair were supplying bread and bakes to the likes of OSMA and Edinburgh Castle from a pop-up shop at Withington Public Hall before taking their first kitchen residency at SEESAW Space on Manchester’s Princess Street. Now the operation is based exclusively at Escape to Freight Island and we have got pies in our eyes for its creations.

Follow the smell of fresh pies near Piccadilly and you’ll land at this small-batch bakery also fondly known as The Crust Cabin. Batard’s kitchen flings out sweet American-style pies with flavours celebrating all things toothache-inducing. S’mores, tiramisu and PBJ marshmallow have all recently been on the menu – all served with house-made ice cream.

“Yank inspiration, Manc location” reads its Instagram page which is full of colourful and wonderful photos of sugar-dusted crullers, mile-high pies and exclusive collaborations with the likes of Bundobust and London-based ice cream guys, Happy Endings.
