Ma Boyles

Global

Ma Boyles, a self-described ‘ale house and eatery’, has been around in various guises since the mid 19th century. As such, it’s become a bit of an institution in this part of the city.

Its menu of pub classics and contemporary crowd-pleasers takes in everything from fajitas to fish finger butties to fluffy American pancakes. It’s essentially feel-good, comfort food which goes down a storm with the office workers and tourists alike.

The decor is a funkier version of a traditional pub with flock wallpaper, worn leather seating, and exposed bricks. Together with the candles and fresh flowers, they create a cosy, welcoming feel echoed by the front-of-house team.

Look out for their bottomless brunch and Sunday lunches at the weekend, and live jazz during the week. At the bar, there’s a good range of local ales, plus an extensive drinks menu including entire sections devoted to boozy hot chocolates, and “Ma’tinis” (geddit?)

This is a place that plays on its historical credentials yet isn’t afraid to adapt with the times. With 150 years of trading behind them, it seems to be working.
