Teppanyaki Chinatown

Restaurant - Japanese

One of the longest-standing Japanese restaurants in Manchester, if not the North West, is Teppanyaki Chinatown. It’s been here since 1987 and was probably many Mancunians’ first experience of the Teppanyaki way of cooking – where the chef cooks in front of you on a hot iron plate so that the sounds and aromas of the sizzling ingredients are as much a part of the experience as the taste.

Teppanyaki Chinatown promises ‘no gimmicks and no tricks’. (Are your ears burning, Sappora Teppanyaki?) But while the theatrics may be dialled down here, the atmosphere is still buzzy and warm and well-suited to groups. And the flavours are soaring.

Their teppanyaki is all cooked in their ‘Tokyo sauce’ of teriyaki and Japanese butter. Options include a wide range of seafood as well as beef, lamb, duck, chicken and tofu.

It also attracts the sushi fans – this is as much as a specialty here as the teppanyaki. Their set menus combine the two, and range from about £25-£45. There are also a couple of good-value lunch deals.
