The Con ClubJapanese
Set in the beautifully restored, airy space of the former Working Men’s Conservative Club (surely an oxymoron?) just opposite the much celebrated Alty Market, The Con Club’s whitewashed brick walls and high vaulted ceiling reverberate the chitter chatter, clinking cocktail glasses and raucous laughter of its diners to create a truly buzzing atmosphere.
The menu is a slightly incongruous mixture of sushi and sashimi plates alongside mains of a more modern European persuasion. Think fillet of English pork with fondant potato, Serrano ham and savoy cabbage, or halibut with Jersey Royals and asparagus. Add to that a pretty extensive lunch and brunch selection, Sunday roasts, a whole load of cocktails and plenty of smoothies and juices for the more virtuous, this place has all bases covered.
