Sneak a peek at the sample menu on The Hungry Duck’s website and, indeed, your tummy may start rumbling and, indeed, you may spot confit duck, game terrine or the sniff of other beasties found roaming on the nearby Lancashire hills and Pennine moorlands.

Slap bang in the middle of the foodie heaven that Ramsbottom has become, peering onto the main drag, this small, simple space with classy marble-topped tables and dark modern-style bentwood chairs, scatter cushions and candles for a soft edge, calls itself a neighbourhood bistro, dishing up modern cuisine inspired by classic techniques. Posh pies and duck-fat roasted potatoes alongside Chateaubriand of Bowland beef, grazed up the road, tick the box for British, while European touches seep in with the likes of wild mushroom risotto, braised chicory, truffled cauliflower and a saffron sauce fish accompaniment.

For afters, dark chocolate dome combined with kirsch cherries tips its hat to the Black Forest, while slightly more out-there dishes might dabble in the likes of parsnip crème brûlée. You can even hit the dessert wines, with a Muscat or a Sauternes – a nice Château Doisy-Daëne that’ll go equally well with the truffley stuff.
