Withington
The neighbourhood guide to Withington
With affluent Didsbury on one side and studenty Fallowfield on the other, Withington sits somewhere in between – both geographically and in terms of what it offers and who it attracts. The coffee shops, bars, community spaces, and events make it popular with students, post-grads, young professionals, and families. But unlike Fallowfield, Withington strikes a balance between the transient population and local residents, with the two mixing together more than you might find further down the road.
Like Rusholme, Fallowfield and Didbury, Withington is dissected by busy Wilmslow Road – once famous as having the most bus routes in Europe. It’s a blessing and a curse to have a constant stream of traffic flowing through but efforts have been made to re-establish Withington as a place for people rather than double-deckers and cars. In 2025, Withington high street underwent a wave of renovations to boost footfall and support local businesses. Outside the library, there’s a new public square with seating and space for community events. While Copson Street has been made largely traffic-free and pedestrian-friendly.
Being on Wilmslow Road does have its advantages – it makes it easy to stay connected to the buzz of the city centre while still being just far away enough to have a more chilled, intimate feel. Go there in the day to get coffee and browse the charity shops. Or head there in the evening for a night out. The pubs and bars of Withington are unbeatable in their own right; less intense than town but still full of life and always busy.
