Street Urchin

Restaurant - Modern British

For Street Urchin, think less about raggedy kids hanging about Victorian mills (although it is on the edge of Ancoats) and more about seafood delicacies. Fish is plentiful on the menu at this English market diner, although meat gets a look-in too.

The specials board advertises the fishes and dishes of the day, and the main menu – and also the wine list – changes regularly to reflect the best produce that husband-and-wife team Kevin and Rachel Choudhary can get hold of; they recommend checking the restaurant’s social media pages for further information about the dishes currently on, or just drop in and enjoy the surprise. It’s all about market-led local produce, cooked and presented simply. Super-fresh fish and shellfish is backed up by seasonal meats, including game when available. Past specials have ranged from whole grilled seabass with lashings of parsley butter and piled high with peppery watercress to creamy cider mussels and a hunk of bread made on the premises, plus on trend ox cheek poutine and hanger steak with cherry tomatoes.

Everything is sourced locally and ethically, from the veg to the cordials, and the contemporary kitchen and bar serves beer from nearby independent breweries as well as a well-curated wine list.
