George Street Community Bookshop
Glossop is blessed with two excellent bookstores: the gorgeous Dark Peak Books on the high street which sells new books and gifts, and this secondhand gem, George Street Community Bookshop.
Owned and run by the community since the previous owner retired in 2018, it’s a quirky, characterful and well-stocked shop spread over two floors (with a staircase lined with more books in-between).
On the ground floor you’ll find mainly fiction with a good selection of crime, sci-fi, thrillers, commercial fiction, literary fiction, and classics. Towards the back, there’s an annex for the children’s books, including collectables from earlier eras. While at the front, you’ll find new books by local writers. Upstairs, there’s two more rooms to explore: trying to summarise the many weird and wonderful subjects covered would be exhausting so let’s just say, they’ve got something for everyone.
Browsing is encouraged and you really don’t know what you might stumble upon amongst the shelves; a first edition, a rare collectible, that one Jacqueline Wilson book your kid hasn’t speed-read yet. Keep an eye out for book launches and events – their social channels have all the details.
