Playfoots
“Just rock up and have the time of your life,” says Playfoots over Instagram. The cafe-cum-bar in the small town of Monton is a little gem on the high street. Serving a popular breakfast and brunch menu, inventive lunch specials and drinks by night, this little cafe takes flavour very seriously indeed.
As far as breakfast goes, the Playfoots Fry Up is a corker, with sausage and bacon all coming from butcher Swaledale alongside all the classic fixings and a veggie alternative with halloumi and crushed avocado. Take it up a notch with one of its breakfast cocktails like a bloody Mary or a Pamplemousse – gin, grapefruit juice and elderflower.
Brunch or lunch offerings are fun and experimental. Think Korean-style fried chicken bagel, or Israeli-inspired sabich – focaccia flatbread piled high with slow-roasted aubergine, house hummus, grilled tomatoes, roasted peppers and cucumber salsa. Add mutton merguez sausage for a reasonable £3.50 extra, or keep it veggie with halloumi for £2.50.
No visit to Playfoots would be complete without sampling the ever-changing offering on the counter, with a famous giant sausage roll almost always sitting front and centre. Look out for seasonal puff pastry tarts, salads and sweet treats too.
