Canto
Canto is a Modern Portuguese restaurant from Simon Shaw, the creative director behind the consistently brilliant El Gato Negro on King Street.
The food is authentic and simple but with the kind of magic touches one would expect from head chef Carlos Gomes who has previously brandished his knives at El Gato Negro as well as Michelin-starred Soho tapas restaurant, Barrafina.
Canto, Portuguese for ‘corner’, is appropriately located on the corner of Cutting Room Square in Ancoats, fast becoming the hippest neighbourhood in Manchester.
The interior design is all roughly sanded wood and lofty beamed ceilings in keeping with the industrial vibes of the Ancoats area, while glazed Azulejos (pretty blue tiles to you and me) and imported cork bring a touch of Iberian style.
Dishes are made with locally sourced ingredients and fine imported specialities from Portugal. These are classic Portuguese flavours with a touch of modern sparkle. Expect small plates like smoked sausage croquettes with black garlic mayo, octopus lagareiro (with new potatoes and baby onions) or grilled aubergine, cottage cheese, coriander, and sea lettuce crisp.
There are also larger sharing dishes, daily specials and fine cured meats to be enjoyed alongside a tipple from their regional wine and beer list.
If you still have room, the dessert list includes classic Portuguese custard tarts and artisan ice creams and sorbets.
