Canvas Manchester
Facing the Oxford Road Corridor in the CircleSquare innovation district, Canvas (from ents specialists BeSixth, of London’s Pickle Factory and Oval Space) features a subterranean live music venue, members club, late-night bar and restaurant – oh, and sauna and plunge pool.
Still, let’s stick with the kitchen, where breakfast is served from 8am, and the all-day menu of “global small plates” runs from noon until 10pm, with international natural wines and cocktails “made from the finest spirits” cracking on into the wee small hours (2am for non-members, 4am for members). Inspired by the dynamic and international neighbourhood, ingredients offer a round-the-world ticket for your tastebuds – from barbecued Korean chicken with peanuts and Asian salad to the more Middle Eastern influence of pomegranate and chickpea lamb chops with mint yoghurt and pickled onion. There are steamed pork and prawn dumplings with citrus ponzu, there are fishcakes with a Thai chilli sauce. The dedicated ‘Planta’ section includes disco fries and garlic Portobello mushrooms, and there’s plenty that’s plant based, including the KFC cauliflower with kimchi and the squash with hazelnut and watercress. A vegan beetburger comes with spiced mango and pepper slaw, while other sandwiches include steak with roast red onion and horseradish alongside tuna and avocado with saffron and garlic mayo. Afters range from cheese to chocolate tart; breakfast plates range from huevos rancheros to the Persian-inspired: Merguez sausage, egg, hummus, spinach and harissa. There’s a Canvas equivalent of a full English, plus pancake stacks, and of course the requisite smashed avo and eggs on sourdough. It’d be rude not to.
Drinks wise, there are health shots and smoothies, teas and coffees, and boozes. Wines include some lesser-known numbers and come from “Argentina, California, Oregon and Italy (to name but a few)” and there’s even a not insubstantial dessert wine list.
