Restaurant - Global

On the corner of Ropewalks’ Wolstenholme Square, Clockworks is housed in one of the city’s oldest surviving warehouses crammed with 200 years of history, and the menu is built to match, with great British classics (and more) given a 21st-century twist.

Inside, it’s all dark woods, exposed brickwork, metal girders and dim lighting, giving it a cosy (if industrial) feel as day becomes night. The evening menu actually starts at 1pm, with small and large plates “specialising in British comfort food with an added edge”. For the former, think black pudding but as bonbons with garlic aioli and ham, egg and chips hock, poached and rosti style. There’s fish and chips main, or, for something a bit more fancy, wild cod pan fried and served with creamy mash, samphire, peas, and lemon, cream and caper sauce. Meats include international flavours such as sticky ribs and fried chicken, and the steak is bathed indulgently in bone marrow butter and comes with confit shallot, smoked tomato and hand-cut chips. Veggie options include the likes of a pulse-pumped shepherdess pie with sweet potato and garlic crumb topping, and there’s a hipster take on a ploughman’s or buns and baguettes if you’d prefer something cold. Everything is made from scratch, and the Clockworks team promise to never cut corners on quality, with breakfast also serious business – from a proper fry-up, The Butcher, to a bacon hash with fried egg. There are even berry bowls, various pancakes, eggs benny and more to help you get your day off to the start it deserves.

Hyper-local beers sit alongside a small selection of wines, but there are more cocktails than you could shake a siphon at, including “expertly mixed cocktails that you will struggle to find anywhere else”.
