East River

Restaurant - American

New York’s lower east side is the inspo here – “where gritty high rise buildings mix with upscale apartments and chic boutiques”, says the website – so think down-to-earth Jewish deli-style bagels and homemade latkes rubbing shoulders with cheesecakes and high-class cocktails.

Salt beef, Swiss cheese and sauerkraut adorn the Reuben bagel; the schnitzel is all chicken, streaky bacon and gem lettuce, tomato and mayo. Burgers include the Katz (basically a burger version of the Reuben bagel), while the East River double patty cheeseburger with thousand island sauce is the house special. The plates section includes nachos, skewers of various types and a 10oz braised short rib in a spicy barbecue hickory sauce. All served on pink plates in pink booths. If your eyes aren’t bigger than your stomach, there are bites, strips and salads – the Lox Caesar is a Scottish smoked salmon take on the classic. Salmon features again in the eggs benny special Uptown, with beetroot hollandaise, or there are other brunch favourites the likes of avo smash and pancake stacks, sweet or savoury with bacon and maple syrup. If you fancy starting the day as you mean to go on, the Hipster breakfast tray (indeed) should see you right with poached eggs, a veggie sausage, slices of grilled halloumi, smashed avocado, mushrooms and coleslaw, plus, in the carbs corner, a couple of latkes (a Jewish staple of a fried cake of shredded potato and onion, since you’re asking) and, of course, a bagel. Bottomless brunch means you get Prosecco (or selected cocktails) for an hour and a half alongside your picks from the brunch or breakfast offer.

You’re spoilt for choice with the drinks menu, says the website: “whether you’re in the mood for a glass of fizz, beer, frozen daiquiri, cocktail or bottomless fun we’ve got you covered!” Tell you what, we saw a picture of the Mile High Clover Club and Red Velvet Ramos together, and we’re sold. There’s also a good selection of coffee, which you might be in need of the next day.
