The Tavern Co
A stalwart of Smithdown Road, The Tavern Co is a casual dining place with a reputation for student and family friendly Tex Mex and brunch.
It’s award-winning Full English is joined on its popular brunch menu with please-all favourites such as eggs benny royale and steak and eggs. It’s Americana-themed inside – and if you’re hunting an American style breakfast with home fries, pancakes, bacon, syrup and all – you’ll find one here.
For lunch and dinner, the fajitas come recommended. A skillet of sizzling steak is delivered to your table with all the accoutrements to roll your own: tortilla wraps, Monterey Jack, guacamole, sour cream, salsa and Mexican rice. Or try the Cajun salmon served over jambalaya with Andouille sausage, crayfish and mussels.
There’s not a lot going on for veggies and vegans: a veggie chilli or a halloumi sandwich are as good as it gets on the mains menu. You’ll find a few more meat-free options on the brunch menu with stacks of pancakes, omelettes and the like. A well-priced kids menu plus shakes and sundaes will please young diners.
Live music, pub quizzes and big screen football entertain the Tavern-goers in the evenings. It’s is a lively neighbourhood hangout that’s been there forever and will probably outlive us all.
