The Barn
The Barn is the sister restaurant of Mark Birchall’s Michelin starred Moor Hall at Aughton.
The restaurant is described as “a rustic setting” but despite living in the shadow of its sister, this dining experience is far from it. Having been awarded a Michelin star itself in 2022, the neighbourhood restaurant serves a seasonal menu using ingredients from Moor Hall’s five-acre grounds and local suppliers.
Head Chef Nathan Cornwell sites his work as Sous Chef at Cheltenham restaurant Le Champignon Sauvage and stage at Restaurant Geranium in Copenhagen as highlights of his career before arriving at The Barn in pursuit of the Michelin dream.
The Barn also holds a Michelin Plate accreditation and 3 AA Rosettes and the menu is rich and varied, changing with the seasons. Not a small plate in sight, it’s a simple three-course affair with set lunch available for a very reasonable £32.00 per person Thursday to Saturday.
Starters could include Carlingford oysters with Daurenki caviar, Saddleback pig’s head served with smoked Devon eel or a 60 day aged Jersey beef tartare. Main dishes are particularly gamey during the season and could be anything from squab pigeon to Aynhoe Estate Venison.
Finish your meal with dessert that might be panna cotta with stem ginger or an extra creamy chocolate “Namelaka” with brown butter and malted barley ice cream. Coffee-lovers will rejoice to hear that The Barn at Moor Hall’s after-dinner coffee is a selection of the highest graded coffees, rare and limited reserve beans sourced from prestigious coffee estates from around the world.
