WowYauChow
WowYauChow is a ‘British Chinese’ from accountant turned restaurateur Henry Yau which has become a firm favourite in Alty. The food is east meets west: Chinese classics with a contemporary British slant, served as small plates to encourage sharing, tasting and hopefully less waste.
The prices are in the ‘very reasonable’ bracket, so it can be a good cheaper eats option or you can load up your table with all sorts, banquet-style. Think sticky belly pork bao with pickled vegetables, soft yet crispy pot stickers with red vinegar and ginger dipping sauce, or crispy king prawns with sriracha mayo.
Comforting Chinese takeaway classics like sweet and sour chicken, prawns in black bean sauce and crispy chilli beef are there too, again in smaller portions for grazing, usually with a modern twist like the addition of watermelon to the piquant, sweet n sour sauce. There’s also an entirely vegan section to the menu with tofu dumplings and cauliflower curry sitting alongside sweet ‘n’ sour notchickin and bowls of “not the cluck” fries.
All this in a sharp, modern environment with a palette inspired by Hong Kong street markets on a backdrop of very Mancunian exposed brickwork and not a starched tablecloth in sight.
