Long Boi’s Bakehouse

Restaurant - European

Located on a back street in Levenshulme, this women-owned and women-run neighbourhood bakery is well worth sniffing out for sweet treats and other fresh-from-the-oven delights – check their socials to see what’s cooking; speak to the team about wedding and birthday orders.

Long Boi’s Bakehouse is the place to hit your chocolate quota – try the salted chocolate tart (we quote: “basically chocolate mousse wrapped in pastry”) – and get your candy-coloured sugar fix in the form of bright pink-iced slices of chocolate, vanilla and raspberry knickerbocker glory Bundt cake complete with a cherry on top or, maybe, baby choc orange eggy pop tarts. Long Boi’s Bakehouse is the place to eat the seasons, with local allotment rhubarb in the rhubarb and vanilla vegan minis, and pink elderflower from owner Jenny’s garden adorning the strawberry curd and zesty lemon meringue tarts. Long Boi’s is also the place for a twist on the usual take: think strawberry cheesecake choux (tbh, why didn’t anyone else think strawberry cheesecake choux?), think brioche buns piped to the brim with cardamom custard or think duffins – where doughnuts meet muffins in a super-light cinnamon sponge that’s baked then dipped in melted butter and rolled in cinnamon sugar. Long Boi’s Bakehouse is also the place to get your mitts on some classics, from Easter hot cross buns to the galette des rois, a French frangipane-filled puff pastry number traditionally shared on Twelfth Night, with the finder of the hidden fève charm declared king or queen. There’s also coffee to wash down your cake and there’s small batch, hand-crafted organic sourdough courtesy of Great Northern Warehouse Mewsters Holy Grain, plus savoury snacks such as mushroom and blue cheese buns or the spud bun, a Long Boi’s classic muddling smoky bechamel, homemade red onion chutney and roast potatoes.

Latest we heard, lunch was being served – the likes of goat’s cheese and beetroot quiche or egg mayo and cress sarnies on house tomato and rosemary focaccia – available to eat in the outside seating area or to takeaway and eat in the comfort of your own home.
