Vegan

Shortlisted in the Manchester Food and Drink Festival Awards 2021 vegetarian/vegan offering of the year, self-styled plant-based eatery Vertigo is open from first thing to early evening, serving freshly made food alongside beers, wines and coffee. Dizziness isn’t mentioned.

Breakfast dishes include pancake stacks of differing types and smoothie bowls, while warm options take in tofu rancheros, served in a tortilla with guacamole and pico de gallo, and Vertigo Benedict, seeing scrambled tofu piled atop toasted sourdough from Trove, which is then all glooped with homemade hollandaise sauce (a vegan version, of course). Lunch features a Reuben bagel (peppered tempeh replaces pastrami here), supergreen mac’n’cheeze with toasted pinenuts, and jackfruit and blackbean chilli with brown rice and various sundries. Smaller brunch plates include beetroot hummus and sourdough soldiers, hoi sin seitan bao buns, and Persian roasted cauliflower with pomegranate and pistachio. Fan of the fungi? Larger plates include truffle potato gnocchi with crispy oyster mushrooms or wild mushrooms, depending on the season, poached enoki arancini, and a hearty mushroom Bourguignon pie with mash, red cabbage and gravy; starters on the dinner menu include mushroom pâté with parsley oil and toast. Tofu tikka massala with poppadom, cheezeburger and fries, and peanut butter and sweet potato dhaal expand the evening selection, so all tastes are catered for.

There are soup, sandwich and salad combo deals, and special set menus, and there’s bottomless brunch (breakfast boozes include mimosas and natural Prosecco) as well as afternoon tea. Talking of which, sweet treats throughout the day range from the likes of cherry and pecan crumble to rhubarb crème brûlée or, if you’re felling a little less virtuous and fruit oriented, churros with chocolate sauce and ice cream, or affogato.
