Where to book next for an ultra stylish Sunday lunch

Want a roast dinner date that feels like a real occasion? Jo Milligan visits one of the most luxurious entries in our Best Sunday Lunches guide

The grand dining room at Tender in Manchester.

Tender at the Stock Exchange Hotel offers Sunday lunch in one of Manchester’s most luxurious locations. It’s not cheap (three courses for £48.50) but the setting – with its vast domed ceiling and beguiling architectural details – makes the experience into an event.

On a sunny weekend, I confess I was a little worried about sweating behind a sirloin when any sensible person would be picnicking in the park. But the airy interior meant everything was cool, lovely and comfortable.

The fine-dining influence of head chef Niall Keating (who I spotted, even on a Sunday) means three-courses are satisfying but not overwhelming. It’s not about stuffing yourself on large portions. Instead the quality of the ingredients shines through.

The beef was rose pink and so soft that the restaurant truly lived up to its name. The Yorkshire puddings were crisp and pillowy-fresh and even the carrot and the parsnip seemed to have been treated with care and attention. Just one of each, majestic in size and tasting utterly and totally of itself.
