Harvey Leonard’s Wine & Ale
The first thing you notice when you step out of Glossop Station will likely be the beckoning glow of Harvey Leonard’s, the bar and bottle shop in the Old Conservative Club building across the road. It’s a lovely place to start a day or evening in the town. (And a handy place to end it too – they recently installed a fridge of ‘train beers’ due to the number of people wanting to buy a bevvie for the journey back to Manchester Piccadilly.)
It’s worth much more than a flying visit though thanks to its extensive collection of wines and beers. Harvey Leonard’s stocks wines from all over the world including plenty you won’t stumble upon in your local supermarket. Japan, Moldova, Georgia and Turkey were all represented when we visited. The beer selection is another big draw with enthusiasts visiting from all over to peruse the craft ales. Stock up in the new shop where they’ll be happy to geek out and help you find something to your taste.
In the bar your options include well-made cocktails as well as the specialist wines and beers. The food is designed to complement the drinks with sharing boards, antipasti, salads and home-made pizzas all popular options. Harvey Leonard’s is known more for its beverages than food but someone is putting as much care and attention into choosing its artisan cheeses and meats as they do into stocking the cellar.
