Shepley’s Cafe
All eyes turn to the Shepley’s Facebook page when Easter approaches, as its small legion of fans eagerly awaits the post announcing that they’ve reopened after their annual winter break.
Run by husband-and-wife team Jude and Jane, the Old Glossop cafe is open from about Easter to about December each year. Its seasonal opening is part of its appeal but it’s far from the only reason it’s loved by locals and visitors.
The food is all homemade, from the cakes and scones to the pies and tarts. Head there from 10am for coffee and cake or lighter bites such as homemade granola or breakfast mezze (tortilla slice with chilli jam, side salads and your choice of bread).
From midday, their signature Pie Plates are served, all made from scratch by Jude in the kitchen and served with a selection of individual salads inspired by their travels in Europe and South East Asia.
The pastry-based goods are on another level. I had a warm goat’s cheese tart made with sweet roasted beetroot and flaky homemade pastry. You can choose from a lighter version or a bigger version of the plates (and there’s kid’s plates, too).
If the weather is playing along, sit outside on their gorgeous riverside terrace. Or hunker down indoors in one of the cosy corners.
