BOX Deansgate

Restaurant - Global

BOX is all about big-screen sports, booze (including two-for-one cocktails) and blokes singing – “bandeoke” is a thing and it exists here – live music Thursday to Saturday, shuffleboard and tournament-themed food (Six Nations served up fiery dragon fries and a burger de Paris).

The Manchester outpost of a popular Yorkshire concept, this is the place to come if you want a front-row seat at every match, game, fixture or fight on a high-definition wide screen – whatever sports are being shown by Sky, BT and Box Office, you will find them here.

Of course, all that shouting and hand-wringing is hungry work, and the “game changing sports bar and kitchen” has all the easy-to-eat plates of scran you could hope for. There’s breakfast with or without cutlery (full English versus bacon or fried egg roll) until 1pm, then the grabbable favourites of burgers, wraps and subs, kebabs and pizzas kick off. The Guv’nor means business: two beef patties are joined by spicy crispy chicken, smoked pancetta and pulled pork, topped with Cheddar cheese, onion ring and shredded iceberg, then squidged into a brioche bun lathered with BBQ sauce and French’s mustard. Yes, there are homemade triple-cooked rosemary and rock salt chips on the side, and the defibrillator’s near the bar.

Slightly better for you is the chicken shawarma made with premium marinated cuts of meat then drizzled with minted yoghurt and chilli sauce, served in a handmade flatbread with fresh crisp salad, and the vegan “duck” wrap with plum and hoisin sauce, spring onions, roasted peppers, cucumber and rocket. Pizzas are posh, using ingredients such as San Marzano tomatoes and fior di latte mozzarella, and cooked in 90 seconds in a state-of-the-art oven. Standard size is 12 inches, but XXL is a winner if you feel like sharing with the rest of the team.

There are the likes of sticky toffee pudding sundae and salted caramel brownie with vanilla ice cream for afters, but don’t forget time is money, it’s a game of two halves and these beers aren’t going to drink themselves.
