Wine and Wallop Prestwich
Coffee, cake, cocktail hour – whatever you’re after, the Wine and Wallop bar and cafe stable can help, and with shabby chic stripped wood and leatherette banquettes, vintage nicknacks and eclectic lampshades, hidden nooks and jazzy walls, just turn the dial to laidback and chill.
Food runs from breakfast right through until early evening, when 8oz flat iron steak frites, alongside beer-battered fish and chips; peppercorn sauce and griddled tomatoes and mushrooms accompany the first, real mushy peas and house-made tartare the second. Butties include haddock goujons on toasted bloomer and lamb kofta in a pitta pocket with hummus and Greek salad. Burgers include beef brioche, buttermilk chicken and a plant-based patty with vegan cheese.
For small plates, think salt cod bon bons or bang bang chicken skewers. There’s a Mediterranean-inspired sharing board, furnished with Manchego cheese, Parma ham, padron peppers and focaccia among other finger food. And the “Nibble & Chat” section offers the likes of marinated olives and ciabatta garlic bread.
Brekkie, incorporates a variety of sausages and bacon types, plus black pudding (we are on Bury New Road, after all), while there’s scrambled tofu and sauteed spinach on the vegan alternative. Brunch involves eggs Benny and all his brothers and sisters (Royale, Florentine…), and there’s no getting away from smashed avocado on sourdough.
Sunday sees traditional roasts on the menu – lamb slow braised in red wine, beef roasted in Marble Brewery Stout or half a spatchcocked chicken flavoured with rosemary and lemon. All with Yorkshire pud, roast tats, creamed savoy cabbage, glazed parsnips and carrots, and gravy. Extras include pigs in blankets and cauliflower cheese. There’s a sharing roast, “just as a family meal should be”, and a kids’ portion too, although there’s not much to wax lyrical about for the non meat-eaters out there.
And if you’re only here for the wine, get involved in Wine & Wallop’s Wine Club for regular tastings, dinners and seasonal wine fairs. Wine and beer is also available to takeaway at shop price.
