You know those fancy places where there’s a flight of drinks matched to each food course? Well, here at Southside, it’s more like the food is matched to the drinks. And the drinks – particularly tequila and tequila-based cocktails – definitely come first, with happy hour, we’re told in no uncertain terms, “every damn day”.
Nonetheless, if you like tacos and you like chips and dips, then you won’t go far wrong – and it’s cheap as chips, too. There are some plant-based options under both listings (after all, even vegans have to line their stomachs), including a guacamole and refried black beans number and a salsa roja of scorched tomatoes, chilli and oregano to dunk your crispy tortilla triangles into. Meat-eaters are in for a treat of rap-inspired, er, wraps, with the Snoop Dogg hotdog and fried onion sausage taco dolloped with ketchup and French’s mustard, or the Notorious B.I.G. cheeseburger taco, laden with bacon, lettuce and special house Southside sauce. Buzzwords include pulled pork pibil and buffalo sauce chicken, pink pickled onion and even Mexican chicharrones pork scratchings.
A good smattering of jalapenos, salsas and hot sauces likely means more drinks, and you’ll probably find yourself tempted by the frozen marg of the month or the thirst-quenching house cocktail, the Southside, packed with fresh lime, mint, sugar – and plenty of gin.
