Morecambe Beach
Morecambe Beach is one of those places where the seaside glamour is very much faded but don’t let the shuttered shopfronts put you off. Coastal towns may have their problems but the beach at Morecambe has plenty to offer.
The views across Morecambe Bay to Grange-over-Sands are stunning. Sit down and enjoy one of the most scenic spots for fish and chips in Lancashire. (Confidentials recommends Atkinson’s, especially the one further away from the seafront by the Sainsbury’s.)
The sandy beach at Morecambe soon gives way to muddy squelch but it’s fun for paddling nevertheless. When the tide goes out, it leaves lots of pools, particularly near The Battery, that are great for splashing in without having to walk to the sea. In fact, you need to be very careful about straying too far from the shore because there are no lifeguards at Morecambe Beach and the area is known for quicksand.
As well as the traditional bucket and spade seaside entertainments, there is also a crab pool up towards Bare so bring a line, a weight and some bits of bacon. It’s a really popular place with kids.
If you tire of the beach, Happy Mount Park has a great natural play area and a splash park too. Or you could go to the Art Deco Midland Hotel for afternoon tea.
