Horse & Jockey
With its Tudor-style facade and picturesque setting overlooking Chorlton Green, the Horse & Jockey has always had the potential to be one of Manchester’s most notable pubs. In 2025 (a mere 200 years since it first opened) it could finally be about to secure its place in that list.
As of October 2025, it’s been operated by the same team that transformed the Black Friar in Salford from dilapidated relic into award-winning gastropub. Using the same formula of beautiful interiors and seasonal, regional cooking led by a high-pedigree chef, they look set to replicate that success here.
The renovated dining area and bar both feel more inviting than before, while still retaining their traditional character. And the new menu, with its mix of classics and modern British dishes, scored highly when Confidentials reviewed it shortly after opening.
Head chef Paolo Bianchi’s CV includes working under Alain Ducasse at the Eiffel Tower in Paris, leading kitchens at Four Seasons hotels in Dubai under Jean-Georges, and later opening Gordon Ramsay’s Lucky Cat in Manchester.
The Horse & Jockey is still a Joseph Holts pub; the new team have added to the Manchester brewery’s craft ales and lagers with a well-thought-out cocktail menu and wine list.
