La Parrilla Bold Street

With its mariachi bands, sombreros, and cantina-style atmosphere La Parrilla Bold Street is Mexico-by-numbers – but done with such cheerful exuberance you can’t help but warm to it. 

The Bold Street branch is one of three, coming after the success of their Waterloo restaurant, and followed by a new opening on Lark Lane.

Food is largely Tex-Mex classics: burritos, tacos, fajitas, nachos, wings and so on. And the chefs are mindful of people who wouldn’t go near a chilli if you paid them – so tell them to ramp up the heat when you order if you like it hot. 

You have the option of grazing on small plates, tapas style, or going for a more substantial main. Everything is daisy fresh, such as the chunky, wobbly, skewered king prawns marinated in fresh chillis, lime and garlic and served with a salad as bright as the decor. Look out for early bird deals that bring the food into ‘cheap eats’ territory before 6pm.

For drinks, fruity cocktails suit the vibe well. Go for a Mexican Sunset made with Southern Comfort, amaretto, grenadine, orange and pineapple juice. Or let the afternoon slide by with a glass of sangria in hand.
