Mollie’s Diner
Mollie’s Diner is the third instalment from the hip motel brand and the first in the North. Originally launched as part of the Soho House group, Mollie’s is now her own woman. However, the design team remains the same, meaning the affordable luxury schtick is very well done.
Think Twin Peaks meets mid-century steakhouse where red vinyl booth seating is levelled up a notch with cushioned ox-blood leather. It definitely takes a leaf out of the Hawksmoor playbook with steaks and a masculine fit-out. Diner tropes are played up to with bacon, egg and maple syrup waffles, double cheeseburgers and all-American apple pie.
In true diner style, it’s an all-day operation where coffee and computers slot in nicely alongside breakfasting hotel guests. You’re as welcome to call in for an ice cream sundae as a serious dinner.
There’s a sense of fun and kitsch in the retro menu but that doesn’t stop it being bloody good. Take someone special for a Porterhouse steak to share; it’s absolutely not like a date at a motorway services. Not even Tebay. This is motel diner reimagined as achingly cool Route 66 road trip.
Don’t miss the pecan pie. It’s a literal slice of Americana that’s too good to pass up.
