10 places to grab a great burger in Liverpool

Located in Liverpool city centre’s Ropewalks area, Almost Famous is a burger restaurant with bite. They serve up behemoth burgers, gargantuan sides and killer cocktails in a candy-coated setting. 

There’s always something going on at this bustling Allerton road wine bar, from steak night and Sunday roasts to live music on Fridays. Plenty of cocktails are also guaranteed while the fusion-style food has all corners of the globe covered, offering something for everyone.

Downstairs on Duke Street, DTH promises some hellishly good scran in its vegan and vegetarian-friendly brick-lined junk food bunker, where dirty burgers, loaded hotdogs, sharers, small plates and other pub grub are overflowing and beers and cocktails are also on the cards.

The Honest Burgers chain chose well when it selected the top end of Bold Street for its Liverpool branch; a worthy location that’s home to some of the city’s best-loved food spots. And while we won’t claim this London-born business is one of them, Honest Burgers is popular and deservedly so.

Hope & Smoke, an independent ‘smokehouse, bar and grill’ on Allerton Road is a local go-to for barbecue food, burgers, and, on Sunday’s, their sell-out roast dinners.  

Love Lane Brewery creates beers for a new generation of beer enthusiasts. The name Love Lane comes from the craft beer, first brewed in a converted railway arch at Liverpool’s Love Lane.

Ma Boyles, a self-described ‘ale house and eatery’, has been around in various guises since the mid 19th century. As such, it’s become a bit of an institution in this part of the city.

If you like getting your hands dirty, then Red Dog Saloon is probably right up your street. Part of a chain, this Texas-inspired barbecue joint is all about meat, or meat slathered in melted cheese. Take a look at the website gallery and you’ll agree this ain’t no place for our vegan pals.

Fried chicken in a bar setting with a big emphasis on music, beer and cocktails – Liverpool independent Pattersons has hit on a winning formula here. 

Tempest on Tithebarn is a social space filling your days from early-morning Neighbourhood Coffee and freshly baked pastries and cakes to late-night parties and cocktails. In between, there’s bagels, brunch and lunch by day and burgers and small plates as the sun goes down. 

The Three Piggies Alehouse & Canteen looks like a transplant from a Cornish surfer town with its flaking driftwood walls, easygoing vibe, and natural light-filled interior. That’s not a bad thing though, especially if you’re just looking for decent casual dining with a better than average range of beers.
