The best Liverpool bars
Liverpool has always been a thirsty city; it comes with being a port. Back in the 19th century, The Times described it as the ‘most drunken’ town in the UK thanks to the number of pubs that sprung up to cater for the influx of sailors and ship-builders.
And while we’re not half as boozed-up as we once were, we’re still known throughout the North for our nightlife. Liverpool’s live music culture, three universities, and strong Irish heritage all contribute to a thriving bar scene. If you’re looking for award-winning cocktail bars, cool drinking dens and buzzing nights out, this is your city.
Here we’ve listed 12 of the best bars in Liverpool, based on highly scientific and objective criteria such as happiest Saturday night dance floor, most quaffable old fashioned, and best disguised doorway.
Choosing just 12 was hard so forgive us if your favourite isn’t on there. We’ve loads more recommended Liverpool bars in our listings – use the filters to narrow down your search.

The Art School Cellars
The Art School Cellars is part of the renowned Art School restaurant but it is also an atmospheric destination in its own right. Head to this charming, subterranean bar for a pre-dinner cocktail, a post-prandial port and cheeseboard, or make it the focus of your visit. The Art School Cellars offers a lighter menu than the upstairs restaurant but it’s no less delightful for that.
