The Midland Hotel

Stories associated with this iconic hotel on St Peter’s Square include hosting the first meeting of Mr Rolls and Mr Royce, and the unconfirmed but oft-repeated tale that Hitler wanted it as his Manchester headquarters, so gave orders that it shouldn’t be damaged in bombing raids.

With its Edwardian Baroque architecture and marble-clad interiors, it’s as beautiful today as it was at the turn of the 20th century, when it was built to serve the passengers of the Midland Railway. They would have arrived at the neighbouring Manchester Central (now a conference and events centre) in gowns that were considerably wider than today’s fashions, hence the hotel’s spacious corridors and airy rooms.

The elegant Edwardian atmosphere has been retained with elements as the Tea Room where their award-winning and very popular afternoon tea is served, and the stunning lobby which houses the Champagne Bar.

Adam Reid at The French is the hotel’s flagship fine-dining restaurant, while Mount Street Restaurant offers a more relaxed menu (albeit in grand surroundings). On the lower ground floor, you’ll find a gym, swimming pool and the luxurious Rena Spa at The Midland.

The 300-plus bedrooms balance heritage with modern luxury and a sense of calm. The Midland is right in the heart of the city centre but its timeless spaces offer a sense of escape.
