Cafe Tabac
Within spitting distance of the bombed-out church, Cafe Tabac has been rolling with the changes at the top of Bold Street since 1974, and the establishment’s latest upgrades have included expanding outside and serving up all-day brekkie as well as late-night drinks.
Available daily from 9am right the way through to 9pm, the breakfast menu runs the gamut, from a full vegan, eggs bennie or toast topped with the likes of scrambled eggs, smoked salmon and smashed avocado to start the day, to big fat fluffy pancakes with mixed fruit (think blueberries, blackberries, raspberries and more), if you’re being good, or chocolate spread and fresh strawberries, if you’re stepping out on the wild side a little later.
Lunches include Caesar salads, sarnies and specials – think club sandwich and fries or feta and spinach quiche, and when they’re gone, they’re gone! The main menu also includes classics along the lines of fish and chips and burgers, including jerk chicken, plus some seventies-inspired dishes like prawn cocktail to keep with the vibe of the decor.
Pastries are baked in house, and include croissants served with butter or jam (or both). There’s a cake counter (think vegan flapjack, rocky road, millionaire’s shortcake, lemon drizzle, carrot…), with a coffee and cake special perfect for a pick-me-up, while the fully loaded hot chocolate selection is on hand to bring warmth and happiness come rain or shine. And cocktails – of course, there’s a fully stocked bar and happy hour every day.
