Factory Coffee

While lockdown marked the end for some businesses, for others it was a chance to expand into surprising new territories. Here’s one we couldn’t have predicted back in January 2020: Factory Coffee, a takeaway coffee hatch within Manchester tailors Dooley & Rostron. 

It came about when owner Adam Dooley realised that a) he really missed his favourite coffee place in the US. And b) he could create his own version here, making use of his prime location on Trinity Square.

The ‘hatch of happiness’ (as head barista Megan calls it) serves a distinctive own blend made at North Star Coffee Roasters that’s by-turns creamy, rich, nutty and mellow. 

They also sell artisan doughnuts from home-baker DGHNT, who dreams up daily-fresh creations such as fig and raspberry, and yoghurt pistachio halawa. Factory Bakes, another kitchen table baker, adds to the treats with her supply of cakes and savouries such as hokkaido (milk bread buns) with béchamel, ham and organic egg.

Like these two micro-bakers, Factory Coffee is starting small. It’s just a hatch at the moment – no seats – unless you’re shopping for a suit. In which case, step inside, sir.

For the rest of us, there’s usually a free bench on Trinity Square where you can sit and snaffle your goodies.
