If you like steak and you like wine, then you’d best start saving – and start starving – for a trip to Gaucho, where clues to the delights within include a menu listing of Chateaubriand “for gluttony or sharing” and a wine list that stretches to 30 pages cover to cover.
The first Gaucho opened in 1994, with a vision of bringing the world’s best steak to London. Gaucho’s beef comes from premium Black-Angus cattle bred at hand-selected farms on the Pampas flatlands of Argentina. There are now 12 London Gauchos, plus Edinburgh, Birmingham, Leeds and Manchester. Here, the vast split-level dining room is housed in a converted church, where the original church organ takes centre stage, even outshining the theatre of the open kitchen.
So, food. There is food other than steak, but there is a lot of steak. There is rump, ribeye, sirloin, fillet, each with three choices of grammage. There are four specialist spiral-cut steaks, again with different weights, the aforementioned Chateaubriand and – ker-ching – the Gaucho Sampler, yours for a mere £100. There are also bottomless brunch deals, never-ending Sunday roasts and lunchtime set menus, endless cocktails, private dining rooms and drinks masterclasses, weekend DJs, BYOB and, in case you were wondering, dogs can come too.
