Pull Up

Caribbean vibes and Caribbean flavours are big at Pull Up at the top end of the Northern Quarter, where atmosphere and authenticity are key words and you will leave fit to burst, especially if you try tackling the famous Hench Box all on your lonesome.

This gives you the choice of two mains, plus rice ‘n’ peas, fried plantain, dumplings and slaw, so is perfect for sharing with friends and gives you the chance to enjoy a taste of all the classics. Best sellers are jerk chicken and curry goat: the first marinated with a secret spice mix then flame grilled then oven blasted then returned to the coals; the second an on-the-bone super-slow-cooked one-pot wonder. Both pack a punch. Ackee and saltfish is Jamaica’s national dish and well worth a punt with its spicy and herby tomato and onion sauce; another Hench choice is the peppered steak stew with spinners, a traditional boiled dumpling.

On the vegetarian front, sweet potato meets it flavour match with coconut milk and spices in the veg curry, and there’s a halloumi box and a fully vegan version in among the various choices in the “big plate” section. A feta, olive and avocado hummus salad makes its way onto the mains, as does fried hake with escovitch, a favourite side of hot, spicy and sour pickle, while lamb chops will be grilled to your liking and served with mango and coriander chutney. Get down to Pull Up (sister venue to The Drop in Chorlton) on a Sunday for all this and a choice of two roasts: the lemon and thyme chicken Reggae Roast or the vegan and gluten-free Rasta Roast, with the option of adding mac’n’cheese.

Desserts are a work in progress, but there are plenty of drinks to cool off with, including pitchers of the signature rum punch. Sweet.
