Schofield’s Bar
Various prestigious best bar gongs have been awarded to Schofield’s Bar since it opened in Quay Street’s iconic Sunlight House in 2021. The most recent being the number one spot in the 2024 Top 50 Cocktail Bar list.
Born in Bury, bartender brothers Joe and Daniel Schofield made their name on London’s cocktail scene before returning home to Manchester. As well as their eponymous Schofield’s Bar, they have links to Atomeca on Deansgate Square and Sterling at Stock Exchange Hotel.
In keeping with the sophisticated Art Deco surrounds, Schofield’s specialises in classics from the golden era of cocktail culture. Go for a Manhattan with Maker’s Mark bourbon and Asterley Bros Estate vermouth. Or a Martini with Boatyard Double gin and their own Schofield’s dry vermouth.
There’s a whole lotta gin, plenty of other spirits and liqueurs (including a Christian Drouin Calvados and Burnley favourite Bénédictine), some well-curated Old World wines and a selection of draught beers, served in a rather civilised schooner of two-thirds of a pint.
Food is of the snacks and small plates variety, including a board of British cheeses and a charcuterie platter, plus an intriguing ‘ask the server’ sweet treats selection.
Top off with an indulgent and warming Irish coffee, featuring Redbreast 12 Irish whiskey as well as vanilla cream, honey and tonka beans, a recipe lifted from Joe Sheridan at Foynes Airbase in Limerick. That’ll keep you warm on the small, dog-friendly terrace.
There’s also a small library of books to read while you sip. Keroac’s On the Road for example, or the brother’s own recipe book, Fine and Classic Cocktails.
