GupShup
GupShup serves food from across India in a setting of laid-back luxury; this is Hale, after all. The menu is relatively small for an Indian restaurant, but it focuses on serving up a taste of the whole country, from the Himalayan Foothills to the Great Trunk Road, and getting the flavours spot on. Quality not quantity. In amongst mentions of Rajasthan and Lucknow, you’ll find Delchester noted as the origin of an excellent tikka pie. It’s a great cross-cultural dish and guaranteed to raise a smile.
There is a good selection of cocktails and perhaps unusually for an Indian restaurant there is an excellent wine list. The main menu is made up small plates, tandoor dishes and mains. Expect to see samosas, prawn kali mirch, rogan josh, kadai chicken, asparagus thoran and the like plus gulab jamun and a delectable chilli chocolate fondant.
There is a breakfast menu served from Friday to Sunday where you can start things off with a masala omelette or shakshuka. Smashed avocado may be everywhere (including on this menu) but there aren’t too many places you can be served Mumbai fave, acuri scrambled egg in the morning.
GupShup also serves a lunch of small plates, salads, thali and a few mains as well as some lovely naanwiches, filled with things like chicken tikka or paneer.
GupShup knows how to do real Indian food but it is not so desperate for authenticity that it forgets how to have fun with food.
