Wah Ji Wah

Restaurant - Indian subcontinent

Tucked away behind Deansgate, classic Indian restaurant Wah Ji Wah is a slightly unfashionable concept nowadays.

While its contemporaries all shout about street food and fusion small plates, Wah Ji Wah is known for the kind of curries that made Indian restaurants a staple on the UK dining scene over the last 30 years. Think jalfrezi and rogan josh served in tasteful surroundings.

That’s not to say their cooking lacks flair. A lobster in pepper masala sauce comes highly recommended, as does the pudding of gajar ka halwa made with carrots and milk. An extensive vegan menu features dishes such as chana dal w’karela which combines yellow lentils and bitter gourd with onion, tomato and ginger.

At lunchtimes, the food takes a step towards the casual Indian eats that places like Lily’s and Indian Tiffin Room have made popular. Their thalis and ‘posh kebabs’ seem designed to bring in a different crowd to the more formal dining in the evening.
