Three Piggies Alehouse & Canteen
The Three Piggies Alehouse & Canteen looks like a transplant from a Cornish surfer town with its flaking driftwood walls, easygoing vibe, and natural light-filled interior. That’s not a bad thing though, especially if you’re just looking for decent casual dining with a better than average range of beers.
The millennial-friendly menu describes itself as pub food – but it’s a little more cosmopolitan than most pub grub, skipping from bao buns to katsu chicken waffles to vegan Moroccan pie. Plates are well-presented and priced at a standard rate of £6.50 for a starter and £12.50 for a main (2022 prices).
The bar stocks cask ales from a changing roster of independents, some local and some from further afield: Salopian Brewery in Shropshire for example, and Ossett Brewery in West Yorkshire. Plus there’s a mesmerising range of canned craft beers including niche flavours like a parkin stout and a tropical sour ale.
This stretch of Allerton Road has seen many food and drink operators come and go but The Three Piggies has planted stronger roots than most. It seems like a beachside-style canteen-bar was what this part of the city needed all along.
