USwim Salford Quays
The idea of voluntarily getting into the oily, cone-strewn waters of Salford Quays would once have filled us with horror. But when Manchester hosted the 2002 Commonwealth Games and needed a swimming venue for the triathlon, this corner of it got a clean-up.
Dock 9 is now home to USwim Salford Quays – an open water swimming specialist that hosts sessions, coaching, races, and events. With qualified lifeguards and regular water-testing and treatment, it’s a safe way to experience outdoor swimming in Manchester. They also host introductory sessions for those wanting to get in the open water for the first time.
You can swim there on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings during the summer season. Or join in with one of their big events, like the after-dark Neon Swim in September or the “exhilarating” New Year’s Day swim. Wetsuit hire is available.
