Indique
Indique is formed from the words Unique and Indian. That’s a bit optimistic as many Indian restaurants have swapped their chicken tikka masala and their lamb rogan josh for bhel puri and gobi Manchurian. However, West Didsbury’s Indique does a good job. Its menu is a tempting one with some unusual dishes and food is tasty and very well presented. How many curry houses have a cloche?
There’s a focus on street food with dishes like dahi puri and chilli paneer and there is a good charcoal grill selection too serving everything from tandoori chicken to scallops. Vegan and vegetarian dishes are perhaps the most interesting and come the closest to meriting the Indique moniker.
Typical main courses include ratan manjosa, or spinach and paneer dumplings in a creamy tomato, cashew nut and fenugreek sauce or lau mussallam – marrow stuffed with potato, nuts and cottage cheese and served with a rich caramelised onion sauce.
There’s also an emphasis on seafood and enough lamb dishes to put sheepdogs out of a job. From masala roasted lamb shank to Bengali king prawn and marrow curries, Indique is continuing the trend that most of Manchester’s best Indian restaurants are to be found in the suburbs.
