The Angel at Hetton
BritishOne of the stars of TV’s The Trip with Rob Brydon and Steve Coogan, The Angel is the original gastro pub with rooms. It’s been on the food map for more than 30 years – but the building is truly historic, dating back to the 1400s. Look out one of the creaky, uneven windows, and enjoy views of Cracoe Fell and Wharfdale in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. House specials change regularly but could include a “treasure” of seafood baked in pastry with lobster sauce and rare-breed suckling pig with juicy black pudding wontons. Desserts are droolsome; an orange and thyme crème brulee. The cheese board could include unpasteurised gouda-style Berwick Edge or golden Harrogate Blue. The wine list has won many accolades. 60 percent is French and there is a spectrum of more than 20 available by the glass. Real Ale, brewed down the road at Dark Horse Brewery, is another strength while early bird and lunch options are good value
