Longshaw Estate
If you’re looking for eye-widening views of the Peak District and miles of contrasting countryside to explore on foot, take a trip to Longshaw Estate near Hathersage.
This National Trust destination is one for the walkers with loads of routes setting off from its three car parks (parking fees apply). And you don’t have to wander far to get the spectacular vistas across the vast heather moorland and Derwent Valley.
If you’re looking for a largely flat walk, head along Froggatt Edge – one of the classic gritstone edges that characterise this part of the Peak District. Or if you don’t mind a bit of a climb, head across the parkland to the beautiful Padley Gorge for ancient oak woodland and babbling waterfalls. Further up, the river flattens out into a shallow stream that’s popular with families who want a picnic spot with paddling. There’s often an ice cream van parked there, too.
Your other option for refreshment is the cafe near the Woodcroft car park, where you’ll also find toilets and a secondhand bookshop. The manor house is privately owned so you can’t go inside. The draw of Longshaw Estate is very much the natural world with its diverse habitats and wildlife – hence its starring role in the BBC’s Springwatch 2025.
Longshaw Estate is accessible by train from Manchester if you don’t mind a steep hike up Padley Gorge. Get the Hope Valley line from Piccadilly to Grindleford. There’s a cafe at the station to fuel you up when you arrive.
