Ciaooo Neapolitan Pizzeria
Cult pizzeria Ciaooo may not be as well-known as some of its beautifully blistered-based brethren, but that’s all to the good. At least there’s a chance of getting a table. As it is, it’s often full of savvy locals who know just where to get some of the best pizzas in Manchester – on Swan Street at the top of Great Ancoats Street it transpires.
Ciaooo isn’t a smart operation. Aspects of the décor are almost utilitarian but there is an enormous cheery mural of the Amalfi coast and lots and lots of lemons. It’s bright, unabashed and full of charm.
Service is excellent and the pizzas are even better. There is a wide selection with a mix of classics and modern inventions. Most importantly, the dough rises above its competitors. It is puffed-up pillowy perfection.
The menu is quite porcine and there is no vegan cheese so vegans will have to content themselves with a marinara but perky porkies will be in heaven and there are always specials too.
The MCR pizza is a top recommendation with homage paid to the city by way of courgettes, ‘nduja, sausage and parmesan and of course the ubiquitous fior di latte, evoo and tomatoes. The Pugliese is a good bet for vegetarians with its appealing mix of smoked burrata, mushrooms, walnuts, parmesan and rocket atop the mozzarella and tomato base.
We’ve told you about Ciaooo but please don’t tell everyone else. Let’s keep it our little secret.
