Holbeck Ghyll
Situated in the hills above Windermere, Holbeck Ghyll could easily claim a place in a list of the most romantic restaurants in the world.
Gourmet cuisine is served with restrained flair under the stained glass and oak panelling of the 19th century ‘The Oak Room’ dining hall.
The menu has earned the restaurant a third AA Rosette (no regained Michelin star as yet). The à la carte could include Goosnargh duck with cider-glazed artichoke and blueberry, or Mayan Gold potato with smoky, buttery shrimp from Morecambe, followed by chocolate passion fruit with wild rice. The tasting menu is defined by classic techniques and sweet-meets-savoury flavours which work.
Loosely themed around Beatrix Potter, accommodation is as plush as you’d expect from a five star hotel.
If you fancy hitting two of the Lake District’s finest in one go, the Samling is a mere hop and a skip over the hill towards Ambleside.
